I love watching a chef work the tandoor. It’s something about the calm, economical movements, I think: the minimal fuss. You appreciate their efficiency, especially knowing, from limited experience, how ferociously hot those ovens are; and how reaching in and slapping the dough-laden gaddi ‘pillow’ against the sides- and getting it to stick- is harder Read More
Mowgli, Honest, Pho, Rosa’s: Church St has become a hub of the better chains. And now here come Fat Hippo. Starting in Newcastle in 2010, this is not an overnight success story but a steady expansion across the North before the moves to Wales, Birmingham and London. News of their Cardiff arrival was greeted with Read More
Usually, the definitive review of a new restaurant comes some time after it has bedded in. They’ve established an identity, you’ve got a frame of reference. That’s not true of Pontcanna’s Thomas by Tom Simmons, because the first review, from The Octopus Diaries blog and written soon after it opened a little after two years Read More
Very quickly last year, Lee Skeet made his Bones Supper Club the most impressive new place to eat in Cardiff. He did it the hard way, too. No paid PR. No invitation evenings. He just cooked and let his food do the talking. Remarkable regional produce, a chef of Lee’s experience and skill, cooking for Read More
Barocco on Wharton St is no longer just another city chain bar. Now under independent ownership, free from the yoke of Brains Brewery, it is also home to brand new pop up Snufflers. The kitchen is run by Max and Shaun, who have done their time in some well respected kitchens across the city- Bar Read More
Here’s a prediction, a happy one in this chaotic, miserable year: you’re going to hear more and more people telling you how good the burgers at Ansh are. Ansh is Welsh through and through. Not just in name (‘Bite’), but the inspiration for each burger writ large. That sense of regional identity is explicit, from Read More
This blog is a very simple thing.
I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes. You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.
I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.Â
A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.Â
From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.Â
